Switzerland's participation in Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea scored a big success: The Swiss Pavilion obtained the "Gold Award" for the best interpretation of the theme of the expo. With half a million visitors, the Swiss Pavilion, entitled "The Source. It's in your hands.", was one of the most popular and most visited pavilions.
Besides the high number of visitors, the popularity of the Swiss Pavilion was also reflected in extensive and positive South Korean media coverage, including some 615 reports on Switzerland's mountain landscape and its significance as a water reservoir and water source for Europe.
The World Expo 2012 was held from 12 May to 12 August 2012 in the coastal city of Yeosu, South Korea, under the theme "The Living Ocean and Coast". A total of 105 countries and nine international organisations participated in the event.
A stroll through the Swiss Pavilion led visitors from a mountain massif across a glacier to a water source, offering them a sensuous experience and raising their awareness of the significance of the glacier landscape as a water reservoir. The heart of the pavilion was an over 4000-year-old ice core from the Swiss Alps illustrating the very long history encased in "ephemeral" ice and its usefulness for scientific research.
